Project Description

Robert Kelly

Robert W. Kelly was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and graduated from Harvard University, Cambridge with a MA in 1978. He has exhibited for over twenty years in both group and solo shows in America and abroad. As an extensive traveler, Kelly often derives images from motifs found during some of the more exotic locations visited. He describes his paintings as “visual mantras” encouraging one to stop and contemplate. Throughout his career he has received positive reviews in many prestigious publications including Art in America, ARTnews and the Los Angeles Times. He is represented in both private and public collections including the Dallas Museum of Fine Art, IBM, New York and the Museum of Fine Art, Santa Fe. Although frequently returning to the Southwest, Kelly resides in New York City.

Octavia Art Gallery: Robert Kelly and Thomas Kelly – From Concealed to Revealed
Robert Kelly and Thomas Kelly share an intuitive sense of shape, form and color. Octavia Art Gallery in New Orleans unveils From Concealed to Revealed, an exhibition highlighting twin brothers whose artistic practices have led them to distinct careers. Robert Kelly’s paintings and Thomas Kelly’s photographs come together through the notion that sacred symbols are concealed in every composition and ritual.

ARTnews – Robert Kelly: Leslie Feely Fine Art
Peering through layers of glossy painted shapes and dustings of ash, vintage paper and printed ephemera become visible in the collages of Robert Kelly. Hidden among the works are faint traces of movie posters, accounting ledgers, and even a ghostly portrait of Rembrandt’s wife.
