Project Description

Tom Lieber

American, b. 1949

Stemming from his interest in human energy, Tom Lieber creates works that evoke notions about the way we experience, feel, receive and express. While in Berkley, California from the 1970’s to 1980’s, he became connected to Aikido, Jazz, and various other forms of awareness-prompting energies. Through this fusion of expressions, his internationally acclaimed paintings are contemplative, subtle in configuration and color and powerfully emotive.

For decades leading cultural institutions have acquired Lieber’s work. Highlights from this distinguished lineup include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art – Los Angeles, and the Tate Gallery in London.

Art LTD – Critic’s Picks: SF Bay Area
In his second solo show at Dolby Chadwich Gallery, Tom Lieber explores the sense of place with his trademark aesthetic. Lieber’s new paintings highlight the duality of his life between Kaua’i and Los Angeles. Observations of natural grown during long walks in Kaua’i manifest themselves through jostling line work, and life in Los Angeles has created luminous hazes punctuated by distinctly urban colors.
