Project Description

Bobby Silverman

Bobby Silverman’s work seeks to subvert and recontextualize the porous boundaries separating the aestetic and the utilitarian, art and design.  He is interested in flattening the hierarchies between the domestic, decorative, and industrial associations of ceramic tile as it has been used in the West and the lofty, rarified status it has attained in the East.

Silverman was originally trained in ceramics and his work embraces the idiosyncratic nature of the material and its unique history.  However, it is the act of viewing, not the material that consummates the work.  Ideas of perception, phenomena, and the transformation of the familiar and mundane are the focus of my exploration.  Gravity, reflection, translucency, the emotions associated with color and the drama of light and shadow, are all addressed in ways that provoke and challenge our preconceptions of these seemingly inconsequential kinds of phenomena.

Bobby Silverman received his MFA in Ceramics from New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University in 1983.  He has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and abroad.  His work is in many public collections including Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, New York, NY; The Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC; Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ; European Ceramic Work Center, s’Hertogenbosch, Holland; Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI; and Shein-Joseph International Ceramics Museum, Alfred, NY.

Handful of Salt – Profile: Bobby Silverman
Bobby Silverman thought he wanted to be a social geographer. (social geography is the study of spatial patterns, investigating how and why we live and work where we do.) On the way to getting his degree, he took a detour to Japan. There he witnessed the daily use of beautiful handcrafted objects, born of traditions that were thousands of years old.
