Project Description

Charles Arnoldi

b. 1946, Dayton, Ohio

Since his breakthrough structures made out of branches in the late ‘70s, Charles Arnoldi has worked in numerous styles and media, from charcoal to bronze. But no matter what material he employs or how large he works, Arnoldi always emphasizes texture and composition through pure color abstraction. In the early ‘80s the artist began an evolving series of chainsaw painting-drawing-sculptures, created by laminating sheets of painted and unpainted plywood into thick stacks. Using the chainsaw like a paintbrush or chisel, Arnoldi revealed the layers of wood and color with each mark; repeated asymmetrically, yet rhythmically. His focus is more or less entirely on the optical, abstracting the very structure of the work in a characteristic tension between motif and disruption.

Charles Arnoldi has been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts grants, as well as a John Simon Guggenheim grant. He has exhibited his work all over in the world and is included in many major museum collections, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Art Institute of Chicago; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX.

AUTRE ROUGH CUTS: An Interview of Chuck Arnoldi
Among the Cool School cohort of artists, like Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston, and Larry Bell, Arnoldi may be the lesser known, but he may also be the most prolific.

Art Blitz Los Angeles: Studio visit/ Charles Arnoldi
Arnoldi’s use of color is gripping, spellbinding and remains transfixed in your memory long after you’ve walked away from the painting.
