Project Description

Tim Hawkinson

b. 1960, San Francisco, CA

Los Angeles based artist Tim Hawkinson received his MFA from the University of California in 1989, and has been exhibiting internationally since the 1990’s. His works employ the use of common materials in surprisingly complex ways. Known for his topics that emphasize the human form, music, mechanization and the passing of time, Hawkinson creates contemporary assemblages that speak to concepts far beyond simple materials. In his career, he has produced a variety of paintings, drawings, photographs, textiles, kinetic sculptures, audio works, and found-object assemblages.

Tim Hawkinson’s work has been seen in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad, some of which include the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Venice Biennale.

The Brooklyn Rail – Tim Hawkinson
For the past twenty years, Tim Hawkinson has been part of a larger movement in art concerned with transforming everyday materials into radically new forms, both abstract and representational. His immediate peers are Tom Friedman and Tara Donovan, both of whom share his obsessive craftsmanship. Despite some striking similarities in their practices, however, Hawkinson’s work has always been harder to grasp.
