Project Description

Will Berry

The engaging paintings and prints of Will Berry explore relationships of color, space and form with assured and fluid deliberateness. Much of the impetus for Berry’s art stems from a desire to communicate both personally and universally–to investigate and encapsulate distilled aspects of the Self while simultaneously maintaining a dialogue with the history of art. A former realist painter, Berry’s work has lately embraced a kind of stylized abstraction which on the surface acknowledges and fuses several Modernist traditions–the Pagan exuberance of Matisse and Gauguin: the poetic, privatized tranquility of Bonnard; the radiant, saturated chromatic play of Color Field painting; the spare, lyrical, linear dynamic of late de Kooning. But the heart of Berry’s work extends back further, to the European Baroque and Rococo, with its emphasis on light, color and motion, and to more ancient cultures and periods encompassing the development and flowering of decorative arts design.

Style Weekly: The smart and quiet paintings of former architect Will Berry
The nuanced work is composed of more materials than at first apparent: oxidized aluminum leaf over gesso over linen, all mounted on a cedar panel.

Artsy Editorial: Art Worth its Weight in Gold
The contemporary use of gold has stretched far beyond its historical foundations in societal status, wealth and spirituality. As a substance with legendary qualities, subject, form or style no longer limits gold. In Bentley Gallery’s exhibition Gold Rush, 15 artists come together to challenge perceptions (and uses) of the world’s most alluring metal.
