Project Description

b. 1968

Travis Rice received his MFA from Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Influenced by his background in architecture, his work incorporates 3D modeling to create complex hard edge compositions that give an illusion of space through both form and materiality. This initial digital process allows forms to rupture, fracture, glitch, and pixilate, but the analog translation is meant to always bring the work back to being a primitive human process. Wandering between painting, drawing, and sculpture, Rice investigates various motifs inspired by the southwestern landscape; the butte, the mesa, and the plateau, incorporating media that test codes of taste through finish, color and application. His interests lie in creating a language of image making that speaks to our current digital era, but roots itself in a historical context through analog translation.

Arizona Foothills Magazine – It’s a Technicolor World for Artist Travis Rice
Travis Rice is a mixed media artist who brilliantly blends modernism, architecture and abstraction into a plethora of artwork that is both eye-catching and thought provoking. He creates work that ranges the gambit including cascading paper sculptures, massive drawings and candy colored paintings. His artwork utilizes traditional ideas of the romanticized landscape and southwest that he has amalgamated with contemporary techniques of 3-D modeling and a modernist sensibility.

New American Paintings MFA Annual – Travis Rice
I am interested in the most fundamental element of the graphic arts—the mark. I am currently exploring the idea of marks as objects and modules that repeat and evolve into larger nondescript forms. In my paintings, the process starts with a simple doodle or sketch made up of marks based on an abstract notion, such as an emotion or personality trait. This doodle serves as a generator from which I can extrude three-dimensional forms via the computer and 3D modeling software.

Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation – Travis Rice
A native of Iowa, Travis Rice makes use of geometric forms and colorful materials to create simple and playful abstractions. He has created artworks on both a large and small scale, in both two and three-dimensional formats
