Tim Hawkinson
Lounge
1993
60 x 107 x 1.75 inches
pastel on fabric (bathrobes) on wood panel with upholstery tacks

Working largely with simplified, hybridized forms that derive from the artist’s complex relationship with his own physical body, Hawkinson explores themes of death and regeneration, utilizing irony, humor, and metaphor, while also examining the exacting precision of the natural world.

Marked by a keen and idiosyncratic wit and curiosity about the world around him, Hawkinson’s sculptural works examine the nature of time and our intrinsic yet often complicated relationship to it. Often using very simple materials including feathers, wire, fingernail clippings, egg shells and his own hair, Hawkinson fashions highly detailed, pristine objects that function as both literal representations and metaphoric associations that touch on ideas about death and rebirth.

In this unique piece, entitled “Lounge,” (now exclusively available through Bentley Gallery), Hawkinson revisits these same concepts, albeit in two-dimensional form. Working with parts from a disassembled bathrobe the color of blood, drawn in pastels and hung on a wood panel with upholstery tacks, Hawkinson has drawn the image of what appears to be the grim reaper with a scythe in hand, and bones haphazardly scattered around him. The image operates as a kind of modern-day Shroud of Turin, yet what makes this particular work so unusual are the materials and the fact it is two-dimensional. Hawkinson, who is known mostly for his large-scale sculptural works, installations and public artworks, gives us a rare and unusual wall piece, the sculptural elements of which are the “found” or repurposed bathrobes. This unique combination of pastel on fabric represents a departure for Hawkinson and a very special purchasing opportunity.

ARTIST’S DESCRIPTION:
Pastel was rubbed over pieces of fabric which were held in place against my body with adhesive. The pastel was deposited on as many bony protuberances as I could locate—leaving a simulated X-ray of my skeleton.
