Project Description

James Marshall

The ceramic sculptures of James Marshall push the conventional concepts of dimensionality through their dynamic forms and saturated color palette; volumes become freestanding planes, solids become molten flowing mass.  Marshall’s work begins with exploring geometric shapes, inviting them to transform, and alternating between recognizable and unrecognizable.  The sophisticated boldness of these sculptures prevails as the essential expression; they seem to emerge from the surface upon which they rest.  The work appears monochromatic from a distance and then reveal great chromatic depth and variation with proximity and according to their surroundings; giving the sculptures a life and energy about them.

CFile.Daily: James Marshall – Liminal Objecthood
For the past twenty years, James Marshall has intensely refined and reduced a specific body of work he refers to as “The Liminal Object”. He is now putting an end to this approach which was once fueled by the limited parameters of Minimalist aesthetics. Before commencing a new series of work, Marshall decides his last show of the era will solely feature black works.
