“I think about painting now and the potential for abstraction to talk about the contemporary world that we live in. I think it needs to reflect that we are fragmented, living virtually as well as physically, walking down the street receiving texts or being called other places at the same time as we’re physically in space.”

Chris Trueman’s artwork explores how a painting can represent being in multiple places at once and show multiple conditions at once, multiple states overlapping in the same place. He uses the persistent idea of “the mark as signature of the artist”, as a record of the artist’s hand, and puts this approach to mark-making to spar with the large swaths of gradient color which tend to have a less personal and more ambiguous feel. Applying and removing paint with a myriad of tools—brushes, squeegees, silkscreens, palette knives, spray bottles and aerosols—Trueman finishes with a deceptively smooth surface for paintings of such rich, visual texture full of light and illusory space.

Chris Trueman is a California based artist. He graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003 with BFA degrees in Painting and in Digital Media, and he earned his MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 2010. Trueman has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, La Jolla, Seattle and internationally in Milan, Delhi, Paris, Berlin, Beijing, Rotterdam and Brisbane. The Lancaster Museum of Art and History presented a solo exhibition of his paintings entitled “Slipstream.” His work has been published in New American Paintings MFA Edition #87, and New American Paintings Pacific Coast Issues #103 and #121.
